Educators Symposium: Southwest Michigan Science Educators Symposium (SWMSES)! November 4th, 8:30-2:30

Mark your calendars! November 4th, 8:30-2:30 is the Southwest Michigan Science Educators Symposium (SWMSES). This symposium is open to ALL K-12+ Science Educators throughout Michigan. Put in the paperwork now for this PD with your administrators. It's CHEAP…only $20 if you can present or $30 if choose not to present. Continental Breakfast, Lunch and give-aways are INCLUDED. It's low-key and a great way for Michigan teachers to network and share. Vendors will be there. Break-out sessions are all science-related areas and include activities, lesson plans, demos and labs. It's FUN! Consider it a much smaller-scale MSTA . PORTAGE NORTHERN HIGH SCHOOL is the location and is right next to the city of Kalamazoo. The SWMSES website is www.swmses.org.

Job Opportunity: Science Education at Hope College

Hope College invites applications for a new tenure track assistant professorship in science education. This joint appointment will be with one of the Natural & Applied Sciences departments and the Education Department. We seek candidates with primary research and teaching interests in the teaching and learning of science and mathematics, a strong record of K-­12 teaching, as well as a current working knowledge of instructional technology and state and national content/instructional standards in these areas.
All candidates are expected to have an earned doctorate with an emphasis in science or mathematics education; plans for scholarly work through publication and research involving undergraduate students; an interest in seeking external funding for that research; and an openness to collaborative interdisciplinary work across departments. Hope College has a strong tradition of undergraduate research, and start-up funding is available to help establish the candidate's research program. Individuals who assume this position will work collaboratively with faculty in the related departments to design and deliver inquiry-based, cutting edge science and/or mathematics methods courses to prepare reflective and analytical teachers in these areas. Successful applicants will: 1) work with pre-service teacher candidates in joint research projects that lead directly to enhanced pedagogy and to deeper content learning in the K-12 sector; 2) foster collaboration between area K-12 science and math educators, Hope College faculty, and pre-service teacher candidates; and 3) provide leadership in developing new lines of inquiry and work that emerge as research in the teaching of science and mathematics continues to evolve, and as state and national standards for K-12 education in these areas change.

Job Opportunity: International Science and Mathematics Teacher/Trainer/Mentor/Coaches

Mosaica Education Doha, SPC is seeking 7-12 male science educators who have proven themselves to be successful classroom teachers and science education trainers/coaches. These trainer/coaches would work for one year in Doha, Qatar assisting national science teachers as they participate in education reform. Applicants must have a minimum of 7 years of classroom experience and evidence that they have done training and coaching of other science teachers either while they were a classroom teacher or beyond. The salary is $55,000 with travel benefits, housing, local transportation and health benefits. We are also seeking a male or female elementary/middle school science educator who would do focused science training from 1 September 08 - 30 December 08. This person needs to be adept at Standards-based instruction, formative assessment methods and use of assessment data to drive classroom instruction. The main goal of this project is to boost science content using engaging instructional methods.
With both of these positions, the trainer/coaches are working with second language learners. It is helpful, but not necessary to understand the nature of ELLs and have pedagogy to promote language and content.
